The Wu Xing or the five-element theory of Chinese philosophy might seem a world apart from French cuisine but the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur’s fine-dining Lafite restaurant will attempt it for a two-month period from September 18 until November 24. Chef Olivier Pistre will launch a special Five Elements menu to bring new energy as well as reinvigorate the established dining room.
Available for lunch as well as dinner on weekdays and Saturday dinner, Chef Pistre’s menu will revolve around the concept of mutual growth and mutual inhibition based on the elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. For example, Water helps Wood grow, Wood fuels Fire, Fire melts Metal and Water extinguishes Fire. Gourmets around town are already guessing as to how the French chef will interpret this ancient philosophy onto plate as well as palate.
Guests may choose from a full menu divided into five elemental categories, with at least one choice per element. Interesting-sounding dishes to try include the escargot cromesquis with Thai salad and spicy shrimp (Wood), slow cooked spicy lamb shoulder (Metal), grilled octopus (Water), roasted quail with arborio rice and truffles (Earth) and French duck breast with foie gras (Fire). Courses are priced from RM42 to RM158 each.
Lafite’s bar has also prepared a variety of Five Elements cocktails to match your meal, should you so wish. Priced at RM65 each, be tempted by Negroniwoods, a Wood cocktail featuring gin, sweet vermouth, Campari and Grand Marnier-soaked wood chips, or perhaps the Inferno, inspired by Fire (obviously) and made with Jamaican rum, grapefruit, lime, sugar syrup and Sambuca.
