One of the softer struggles of lockdowns has to be social distancing from your favourite barista. The coffee-dependent usually have a preferred brew, style and drinking temperature, and any departure from this can upend a morning.

Helping enthusiasts get their java jolt just the way they like it is Nescafé Dolce Gusto. Its name is a portmanteau of Nestlé and café, and the Italian term for sweet life (dolce gusto). Collectively, this alludes to professional coffee that not just satiates a craving, but is part of a lifestyle that celebrates the sweeter side of things.

While fans are familiar with the consistency and convenience delivered by this coffee capsule system, two new iterations have joined the stable of machines featuring technological breakthroughs that make mornings more bearable. The Genio S Touch and Genio S Plus promise personalisation at the touch of a button, placing even more control in the hands of consumers. This includes its compatibility with not only the Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules, but also Starbucks at Home pods, bringing your favourite café that much closer to home.

The Genio S range is all about function, convenience, affordability and style, packaged in a sleek, lightweight expression

The Genio S range is all about function, convenience, affordability and style, packaged in a sleek, lightweight expression that comes in several colours. The new models feature the Espresso Boost Technology for increased coffee intensity and the Temperature Selection Function, which adjusts the heat of your beverage for better drinkability. Should you need a double shot to power you through that never-ending meeting, or prefer to sip your coffee scalding hot rather than just above room temperature, either machine is ready to serve you.

Distinguishing the models is their interfaces. The Genio S Touch, available in silver, has a full-on touch screen panel that allows for customisation of water levels while the Genio S Plus in red or black does the same via an intuitive LED ring. Both panel and ring are worked into the round projected head of the machine, creating the impression of a friendly robot.

The automatic system is complemented by a 0.8L water tank capable of holding three to five cups of water — perfect for a family or a very stressful day — and 15 bars of pressure for a powerful pour. Supplement these with the full range of flavours, from Espresso Intenso, Americano Rich Aroma and Café Au Lait by Nescafé Dolce Gusto to Starbucks’ perennial favourites like the Americano, Espresso, Cappuccino and Latte or Caramel Macchiato.

With the Covid-19 pandemic refusing to relinquish its grip and the near future uncertain, there is precious little that offers assurance. One of the few things within your control, however, is your daily coffee. Nescafé Dolce Gusto’s promise of reliability does more than create the perfect cuppa every time. It also provides a moment of calmness and certainty that tastes as good as it feels.

The Genio S Touch and Genio S Plus retail at RM669 and RM599 respectively. They can be purchased at selected supermarkets and electrical and department stores, or online at Lazada or Shopee.
