Out now: Haven Summer 2023

A roundup of design-conscious hotels and getaways for the season.

Note from the editor, Diana Khoo:

We are paraphrasing, of course, but in the words of American writer and commentator Al Bernstein: “Spring being a tough act to follow, God creates summer.” Despite being a child of the tropics through and through, there is something magical about the idea of summer. Put it down to the overarching influence of pop culture, but just the thought of sun-soaked days scented with the smell of barbecue, chunks of cold watermelon, technicolour iced lollies, beach hats and salt-flecked skin and hair is enough to make the world right again.

It is in this frame of mind that we approached Haven this issue. Yes, the focus is still on homes and interior decoration, but we also thought it appropriate to include a roundup of design-conscious hotels and getaways (all by the water’s edge) for you to consider this season. From the brand-new Capella Sydney (we cannot get enough of Meadow, its bespoke kinetic sculpture by Amsterdam-based Studio Drift that lights up the entire space of its lobby lounge) to Sentosa, a new heritage homestead in Janda Baik, Pahang, that is a treasure trove of art, sculpture and historic bric-a-brac lovingly amassed by Tan Sri Kamarul Ariffin, his wife Puan Sri Frances and family and set in a stunning four-acre tract of land surrounded by jungle, fruit trees and lily ponds, we are sure you will find something new to discover and love.

Summer is also a big month for the French, with the 14 Juillet celebrations in the offing. We are thrilled that the new Ambassador of France to Malaysia, His Excellency Axel Cruau, and wife Dourene opened their residence for a preview of how to mark Bastille Day, complete with the easiest ideas on a French-themed spread that can be enjoyed indoors or under the shade of a tree somewhere.

For those who like things a little more elaborate, do not miss the first look at Heeren Mansion, a stunning new four-bedroom heritage home in the heart of historic Melaka that’s available for rent and private events. Chatelaine and custodian Jennifer Ker takes us on a private walkthrough. If you’ve ever dreamed of hosting a proper Tok Panjang feast or living like a true Nyonya, here’s your chance. Read about it on Page 72.

There’s much more to discover within our pages, of course, so please enjoy the issue. Catch you again when autumn rolls around.
