Out now: Haven Autumn 2025

How Malaysians are fostering a sense of peace and belonging at home.

Note from the editor, Diana Khoo:

There is the old truism that a house is more than just a building. We all know that. That is why we call it our sanctuary, our safe space, our … well, for want of a better word … haven. As the world outside continues to spiral into madness, we can and should look within to foster a much-necessary sense of peace and belonging, ensuring that life remains positive and fulfilling.

For ideas, we travel north to visit the residence of renowned restaurateur Yeoh Kah Hock of the YKH Group of Restaurants and whose dining rooms include 32 at the Mansion, Suffolk House and Beach Blanket Babylon. Set in George Town, Penang, the almost 100-year-old structure has undergone major refurbishment, transforming from a run-down spot to a jazzed up heritage living space. With its exteriors painted green, it is aptly christened Seri Kaya, a nod to every Malaysian’s favourite coconut jam. The interiors are a veritable masterclass in eclecticism and you would need to turn to Page 40 to see why.

Those who prefer to find safety and serenity amid nature, flip to Page 24 where the Klang Valley abode of a young family might just offer the inspiration you need. Doing away with most of the lawn to make way for a series of magical pools (a remarkably brave step), the stars of this show are undeniably the magnificent Barringtonia acutangula trees, chosen for their ability to grow in water. When in bloom, the entire outdoors is perfumed by the tree’s red flowers.

If the kitchen is your happy place and you feel like discovering your country from the heart of the home, then our Entertaining section on Page 72 might be just what the doctor ordered. Featuring four Jawi Peranakan recipes, courtesy of Nurilkarim Razha of the Jawi House Café Gallery in George Town’s historic Armenian Street, they have been simplified to encourage even the most timid wannabe chef.

Like we said before, we need to look within and do what is necessary to live a life of meaning and purpose, however humble or simple it may be. So, pick up those pots and pans, rearrange the wardrobe or bookshelf, plant that flower bed you have been procrastinating on for months and actually place importance on spending time where it truly counts — at home.
