Roger Dubuis’ Metamorph Merlin rounds out Knights of the Round Table trilogy

Within Roger Dubuis’ world of Hyper Horology, age-old watchmaking conventions are elevated beyond their aesthetic and technical boundaries. Creative themes range from the celestial heavens to the ancient lore of the Brocéliande forest, with medieval Arthurian legend finding its most powerful expression in the iconic Knights of the Round Table series.

Its latest chapter spotlights a legendary wizard. Following the Omniscient Merlin in 2024, which celebrated the sorcerer’s all-seeing wisdom, and the Enchanter Merlin in 2025, dedicated to his mystical powers, the brand is now concluding the trilogy with Metamorph Merlin, which pays tribute to his extraordinary ability to shapeshift.

Drawing on the enchanted forest where Merlin is said to have assumed multiple forms, and where the Lady of the Lake — who bestows King Arthur his magical Excalibur sword — is believed to dwell, the dial reimagines the dense woodland using hexagonal columns, echoing the Giant’s Causeway’s basalt formation which is also shrouded in myth. Composed of 57 individually crafted blocks, the multi-layered landscape merges green CVD-coated components, polished pink gold, transparent glass and shimmering Crystalium to capture a play of depth, texture and light.

Twelve emblematic knights take their positions around the dial. Standing just 6mm tall, each pink gold figurine required around three days of meticulous hand-finishing by a specialist engraver. Flanking the crown, sword-inspired guards reference the Excalibur. In a first for the collection, the narrative spills over onto the pink gold case itself. Hand-carved in micro-relief, the case middle portrays Merlin both as a human sorcerer and majestic white stag, demonstrating the vast scope of the maison’s métiers d’art.

Powering this three-dimensional stage is the automatic Calibre RD821, conceived, built and finished entirely in-house to accommodate the dial's complex layers. Encased in a 45mm pink gold frame, a box sapphire crystal showcases the sculptural scene from every angle. Flipping the watch over reveals a skeletonised 360° oscillating weight — inspired by medieval stained-glass windows — seamlessly continuing the fusion of myth and mechanics.
