Delvaux new flagship at HK K11 MUSEA shaped by legacy and design

The world’s oldest leather house celebrates its new iconic Hong Kong location by marrying beauty and function, heritage and the contemporary moment with its legendary bags.

All Delvaux boutiques worldwide carry their own expression

Delvaux transformed flagship, place the Belgian leather house within one of the city’s most carefully curated cultural and retail destinations. It’s a fitting home on this side of the world for the inventor of the modern handbag, who filed the first-ever luxury leather handbag patent in 1908 and continues to accent the well-heeled with its articulate styles.

The opening was marked with a "Brillant" soirée that drew a close circle of Who’s Who: collectors, clients and celebrities, including legendary Hong Kong singer Kelly Chen and rising-star actresses Amy Lo and Natalie Hsu.

Holding pride of place at the exclusive launch was the new Brillant Tempo collection, espousing levity and creativity in its reinterpretation of the emblematic Brillant. The clever accents and elegant details weave in a quicker rhythm that reflects the reality of a woman who has things to do, places to go and people to see while maintaining the timeless structure of its partial namesake. Its Emblem Tales collection carries a similar wit, this time in the form of remarkable playful frescoes that seem almost animated with textured leather marquetry, evocative silhouettes, and offbeat motifs iconic to the maison.

This flagship is a genuine passion project for Loubier, epitomising his philosophy of luxury retailing as an intimate and immersive experience, evident from the vision of rich details that greets guests as they approach the boutique. Its façade suggests a promising jewellery box with its Art Deco lines — structured and geometric, contrasting with the undulating curves of the surrounding ceiling — before giving way to an interior that unfolds in a sequence of rooms rather than a single open space. Movement through the flagship feels guided without being directed, each area revealing a different layer of the house’s identity.

The VIC salon anchors the experience. A 17th-century Flemish tapestry depicting a bridal procession on horseback through charming village scenery stretches across the room. Its detail draws the eye in, while establishing a clever balance of joy and ceremony, a reminder that craftsmanship in any medium can hold paradoxes beautifully and dictate atmosphere.

Just opposite, the mood shifts. The "Bar" area evokes the much-loved Belgian tradition of gathering around for informal exchanges rather than formal presentation. Clients are encouraged to pause, savour and chat, a small but deliberate departure from the usual pace of luxury retail, where movement is often linear and individual.

Every object has been chosen with precision. A gilt wood Dragon Mirror by French maître Gabriel Viardot embodies an era of artistic exchange between East and West, which gives rise to objects of rare originality, symbolically watching over visitors while offering protection and prosperity.

This tightrope of heritage and contrast is carried throughout. Belgian references sit alongside Asian influences without being forced into alignment, creating an ambience that feels layered rather than themed and fulfilling its vision as a creative bridge between Brussels and Hong Kong.

Informed by the 19th-century philosophy of applied arts "Les Arts Décoratifs", the K11 MUSEA boutique makes the case for why beauty and function must work hand in hand. Like all Delvaux boutiques, its interpretation of this spirit is unique, acting as a portal that whisks the visitor to fantasy that fuses the distinctive aesthetics of the locale and the originator. All Delvaux boutiques worldwide carry their own expression, from emblematic addresses in Paris, London, New York and Milan to Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing.

Within this setting, the sumptuous leather handbags that have earned Delvaux its repute are given their due in all their surrealist and playful humour. The Brillant holds its architectural clarity today just as strongly as it did during its debut in the 1950s. The unconventional Tempête introduces a sharper structure that contrasts exquisitely with the more bohemian Pin, which relaxes the line. Each design carries a distinct point of view, shaped through construction and proportion rather than surface detail, drawing from over 3,000 designs in its century-old archive.

“The styles Delvaux creates are masterpieces and stand the test of time, blending outstanding craft with confident design and timeless elegance,” says Loubier. “They are sustainable by design. It is embedded in our design, manufacturing and longevity. We see our clients as custodians who will cherish and pass on their bags to the next generation, creating a natural circularity.”

Founded as a leather goods artisan in 1829 and official purveyor to the Royal Court of Belgium since 1883, Delvaux has shaped, shared and celebrated Belgian cultural references and values with the world. But in turn, it also drew in inspiration from the world around it, referencing movements and philosophies that appointed it as a contemporary tastemaker while steadfastly holding an undercurrent of Belgian values across time and trends.

Similarly, at K11 MUSEA, that legacy is not revisited for effect but extended, given space and allowed to evolve to appeal to the worldly customer who draws from a wide range of references to curate a personal style.
