Eight local restaurants added to Michelin Guide KL and Penang

The updated list reflects the dynamism of Malaysia’s food scene.

Three restaurants in Kuala Lumpur and five in Penang have been added to the Michelin Guide, showcasing a diverse range of cuisines and local eats. In a statement posted on its website, Michelin shared that their inspectors visited the premises and found them “too good to keep as a secret.”

The eight establishments will not have any designation of Stars, Green Stars or Bib Gourmands yet as the distinctions will only be revealed at the next annual ceremony. For your dining ease, the new venues will be featured in both the Michelin Guide Malaysia website and the Michelin Guide mobile application. They will be highlighted with a “New” symbol for easy identification.

According to the Michelin website, there will be two releases of restaurants before the ceremony. This will be the first one.

KUALA LUMPUR

Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice
The stall has been selling cook-to-order chicken rice over charcoal in claypots for more than 30 years. 

Roti by d’Tandoor
Butter chicken masala and chewy naan bread are signature staples at this North Indian brand, which set up shop in Malaysia during the 1990s.

Hor Poh Cuisine
This unassuming neighbourhood joint, which has operated for over 20 years, is known for its hor poh lei cha.  

 

PENANG

Ah Boy Koay Teow Th’ng
The family-run shop, now operated by the second generation, specialises in koay teow th’ng, served in soup or dry.

Ghee Lian
Striking the right balance of sour and spicy, Ghee Lian's green tom yum with fried fish topping has made it a household name on the island.

Hot Bowl White Curry Mee
The small shop on Jalan Rangoon, George Town, is not only famous for curry mee served in a coconut milk-based broth with curry paste on the side, but also spiced loh bak or Teochew guang jiang (beancurd rolls).

My Own Café
A family-run business that serves hearty bowls of penang asam laksa, nyonya laksa and fried spring rolls stuffed with vegetable filling.

Siam Road Char Koay Teow
The line that snakes around the stall is testament to its growing popularity. The stir-fry flat rice here is known for its wok hei and generous portion.
