Rumour has it that the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother used to sneak in bottles of Krug whenever she was in hospital. If the Champagne, founded in 1843 in the city of Reims by German-born Joseph Krug, was good enough for the queen, it is certainly good enough for us too.

Dubbed the ‘Rolls Royce of Champagne’, Krug has always lived up to its status as the first and still unique Champagne House to create only Prestige Champagne every year since its origins. Thus, its latest accolade ‘The Most Popular Sparkling Wine’, awarded by the well-respected Wine & Spirits Magazine, came as no surprise.

The ranking, which highlights Krug’s strong momentum in the US, was determined by asking wine buyers to list their ten top-selling wines in order of popularity. Venezuelan-born Maggie Henriquez, president and CEO of Krug, is elated with the news.

“Going from being virtually unknown to being named the most popular sparkling wine by US Restaurants in Wine & Spirits Magazine, is the reflection of eight years of enormous and constant work.”

Champagnes have become the sine qua non of any grand celebrations. But if you’re not into vintage, the Krug Grande Cuvée 166ème Édition – composed around the harvest of 2010, blended in the spring of 2011 and bottled in June 2011 – is a great starter for the Champagne-curious. Imbued with aromas of flowers in bloom, gingerbread and citrus fruits, the special 166th edition leaves a lingering flavour of hazelnut, nougat, almonds and honey in your palate. Bust out your cheese platter – this special bubbly goes hand-in-hand with an extra mature parmesan.
