If prospective buyers of bendable phones were sitting on the fence when Samsung first launched its foldable phones, the new Galaxy Z Fold 4 may just tip the balance in favour of the South Korean phone-maker. Set for a triple-lens camera and a distinctive larger 7.6in main screen, with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, the device is part of Samsung Electronics' latest gambit to seal its reputation as an industry leader in the foldable phone market.

The toughest and smartest foldable yet, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 combines Samsung’s collective mobile technology expertise to create a device with increased functionality, whether you need to go hands-free or simply set it down. Android users will be pleased to know that this will be the first device shipped with Android 12L, a special version created by Google for large-screen experiences, including foldables.

Eagle-eyed users will notice a Taskbar on the main display, which is not unlike the layout you will find on your PC that allows instant access to your favourite and recent apps. For your added convenience, new swipe gestures allow you to flit between full-screen apps and pop-up windows, or split your screen in half. The S Pen functionality will also help you go the extra mile, enabling on-the-go drawing and note-taking, be it for work or play.

Minimised bezels and lightweight materials make this Fold even more pocket-friendly, so you can get more done on the move. Although it is 3.1mm shorter than its predecessor, it is not wider, so it measures the exact same 67.1mm when it closes. The Flex Mode allows you to prop up the phone in a position similar to a laptop, without the need of a tripod.

If you have always dreamt of owning a triple-camera set seen on the back of the Galaxy S22 and S22+, crave no more as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 flaunts an upgraded 50MP-wide lens and 30x Space Zoom lens. The melange of camera modes, including the larger Zoom map activated on Capture View Mode, Dual Preview and Rear Cam Selfie are custom-built for enhanced capturing flexibility.

On the flip side

The outgoing “clamshell” phone defied all expectations last year, when 70% of its foldable shipments were accounted for. But its new successor, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, is touted to gain wider consumer acceptance with a downsized hinge, bigger battery and better camera capabilities.

Subtle changes make great impact too, as evidenced by its overall build that measures at 16.5cm high when open, a millimetre less than its predecessor. But here comes the main kicker: It brands itself as the ultimate self-expression tool, especially when you can shoot hands-free video or capture group selfies by activating the FlexCam. Almost made for social media, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 takes high-quality selfies right from the cover screen by leveraging the main camera with the upgraded Quick Shot mode. Look forward to crisper photos and videos as a 65% brighter sensor, powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform, takes over.

Never have to worry about having enough juice on your device, as the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can capture, watch and connect longer between charges with the expanded 3,700mAh battery. Now supported on this iteration of the Flip, the superfast charging can replenish your battery capacity up to 50% in around just 30 minutes.

A thorough hardware refinement calls for a slimmer hinge, straightened edge, as well as contrasting hazed back glass and glossy metal frames. The creative can fully personalise the Galaxy Z Flip 4 inside and out, with Galaxy themes on both the cover and main screen with custom fonts, icons and designs.

Buddy up

Audiophiles have something to rejoice at, as Samsung’s new top-of-the-line earbuds provide the most immersive wireless audio experience to date. The Galaxy Buds2 Pro is equipped with Hi-Fi 24-bit Audio, augmenting your music with crystal-clear resolution through its high-dynamic range. The seamless codec (SSC HiFi) transfers quality music without a pause, while the new coaxial two-way speaker delivers sounds richer than ever. And when your daily routine demands absolute focus, the embedded active noise-cancelling function allows you to take calls while tuning out background noise.

Now 15% smaller, the compact music companion sports an ergonomic design and secure fit, engineered to prevent rotation. Built to lodge safely in your ears, the stylish Buds can withstand swift movements in the gym or even on the road.
