Volvo is now one step closer to achieving its ambition of reducing carbon emissions per car by 40% with the launch of the new XC40 Recharge T5 R-Design. This makes Volvo the only automotive company based in Malaysia to offer a full range of Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) all assembled in Malaysia.

The XC40 Recharge T5 is different to Volvo’s other plug-in hybrid models in that it isn’t positioned as a sporty pinnacle to the range. Instead, it focuses on efficiency under the guise of an R-Design shell. For anyone on the lookout for an efficient, practical and stylish family car, there really isn’t a better choice than this. Here’s a quick run-down of the details that we have right now.

Performance

Built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the XC40 Recharge T5 comes with Volvo’s first-ever 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine Drive-E powertrain, with an electric motor mounted to its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to drive the front wheels. This set-up ensures a more sustainable drive – CO 2 emissions are just 50g per km – while maintaining the luxury and performance of a Volvo.

The car boasts a combined output of 262 hp and 425 Nm of torque, while 160 Nm of torque and a maximum power of 82 hp is generated from the electric motor to give a boost of instantaneous acceleration. Together with the petrol engine, the XC40 Recharge T5 reaches 100km/h in just 7.3 seconds. This is not the car you could hope to achieve especially high speeds in, as all Volvos are speed capped at 180km/h. There are five different drive modes for a more dynamic driving experience: Hybrid (default), Pure, Off-road, Power and Individual.

Safety + technology

If there’s one thing you don’t have to second guess with a Volvo are its safety and driver assistance features – this includes Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation as well as Cross Traffic alert with brake support. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keep things simple by unlocking seamless control of integrated entertainment options – hello, long car drives! Wait for our review for more details on this.

Design

Featuring a stylish and urban look, the new XC40 retains its bold and expressive design, highlighting its signature R-Design trim. The car is available in five colours: Blackstone, Crystal White Pearl, Bursting Blue Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic and Coral Red Metallic. Every inch is innovated with flexible storage solutions. Retractable bag hooks, large door bins, hidden compartments – this aspect really describes how well-suited this car is for kids. With a volume of 460 litres and a clever folding floor, the XC40 has a load compartment that is both practical and versatile, its comfortable load space not compromised by its battery.

Priced at RM255,888, the XC40 Recharge T5 is now reduced to RM241,997.04 after sales tax exemption (on-the-road, without insurance) until June 30. The car can be viewed at all Volvo dealers nationwide, and is available for online booking here.
