Your CNY meal can help fund the education of underprivileged children at Dignity for Children Foundation

You can also choose to gift a meal to a family.

Chinese New Year this year won’t be ushered in with the customary amount of cheer and chatter. While most of us will be totting bags of goodies for the family, let us not forget the underprivileged children and families which have sunk even further into poverty.

Local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Dignity for Children Foundation has always aimed to break the cycle of poverty through the provision of quality and holistic education for urban poor children between the ages of two and 18. To further its pursuit, the organisation has launched special Chinese New Year packages to help fund their skills-training programmes that help children assimilate into the real world.

Offerings include a 5 Spice Roast Chicken Family Meal (RM138.30), consisting of one whole roast chicken, yee sang with zesty plum sauce, butter rice and mango pudding for four pax, and flower tea.

The local NGO is also offering an array of cookies, perfect for gifting

The meals are also sold separately if you’d prefer just the chicken rice. At RM59.90, you’ll get a whole chicken with four butter rice, as well as ginger, soy sauce and homemade chilli sauce to go with it. The yee sang is priced at RM59.90 as à la carte.

There are gift sets you can deliver to your loved ones too, since house-visiting won’t be possible this year. Pick from an array of cookie flavours (almond & cranberry; walnut chocolate chip; and matcha & white chocolate chip) or get them as a set of three at RM60.

Sew x Dignity, an extension of the foundation that offers lovingly sewn goods from upcycled and local materials made by students and refugee mothers, has designed HUAT batik aprons to match the festive season too. Since most of us will be cooking for the big occasion after all, purchase the aprons — made from 100% cotton with adjustable straps — for your own use or the gourmand in your life.

Acts of kindness may not solve the insurmountable problems faced by the impoverished but they can certainly give people hope. If you’d like to spread the festive cheer even more, gift a chicken rice meal to a student’s family at just RM75.
