BMW Shorties 2023 announces top 10 finalists

Support local Malaysian filmmakers by casting your vote before July 27.

BMW Group Malaysia and the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) have announced the finalists for the BMW Shorties 2023, Malaysia’s most prestigious and longest-running short film competition. From an impressive pool of 133 submissions, these top 10 short films have been carefully selected by a distinguished panel of judges, consisting of renowned figures from the film industry.

The finalists are Ah Ma by Chew Boon Wai, Aku, Ayah dan Musik by Mohd Hanif Fikri bin Jaafri, All Who Leave Go There by Ikram Haizammuri, INMATES by Palani Veloo Subramaniam, Selalu Ada by Faizal Noar, Selamat Malam, Dunia! by Putra Adib, Taugeh by U Wang, The Known Stranger by Bryan Sim, The Missing Trophy by Wong Ga Dong and Boys by Fabian Loo. The finalists will now vie for the coveted Grand Prize of RM80,000 as a production grant, which will allow them to further hone their craft.

Apart from the Grand Prize, the BMW Shorties will also recognise talent in supporting categories, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Story, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Judges’ Honourable Mention, People’s Choice Award and Best Student Shorties Award.

The final 10 films are now available for the public to watch on YouTube. Support local Malaysian filmmakers by voting for your favourite and stay tuned through official social media channels for updates on the voting process. Make your voice count in this celebration of cinematic talent.

Adding to the excitement, the BMW Shorties Awards Night will take place during MIFFest to celebrate Malaysian cinema alongside international works. MIFFest, scheduled from July 23 to 28, will feature a line-up of captivating film screenings, enriching masterclasses and invaluable networking opportunities throughout the week.
