If Covid-19 has taught us any lessons, it’s to never take life — and even its simplest pleasures — for granted. It’s heartening to see industries such as live music and the arts bouncing back after those difficult years. After all, what’s a show without an audience?

If being serenaded with smooth jazz tunes is your ideal way to end a work week, Singaporean musician Jeremy Monteiro bears good news. The maestro revealed that Tin Box Group, a multi-concept lifestyle brand that operates a number of live entertainment venues and restaurants in Singapore, has made its foray into Kuala Lumpur. Monteiro is the lead partner and musical director for Simply Jazz, Tin Box’s intimate jazz lounge back home, and he will assume the same roles for the group’s outpost in KL.

Simply Jazz is established alongside Simply Retro, a vinyl-based club-restaurant catered to retro music lovers, and Simply Live, which features mandopop acts. The three venues will officially open their doors at TREC KL late November.

Monteiro will be working with established jazz pianist Michael Veerapen to curate the KL shows, featuring local jazz artists and musicians before inviting international guests to perform between its locations. “We are going to depend on the very substantive pool in Malaysia first. Around the first or early second quarter [of 2023], we'll start having international artists,” said Monteiro.
